We have been intending to repaint Truett's room for months now (we liked the color we painted before he was born, but I unfortunately got flat paint that marks when you look at it too hard, not a good choice for a child's room!), and even bought special non toxic paint a couple of months ago but just hadn't gotten around to actually painting. Since we knew we were going to end up painting we haven't hung the pictures, border, or letters spelling his name that we have had just sitting around. With his 6 month birthday coming up on Monday we decided that we should probably try to actually finish his room. So we decided this weekend was going to be painting weekend, the plan was to get as much done while he was taking his morning nap. So as soon as he fell asleep we sprang into action and moved all the furniture into the middle of the room and Chris taped while I started cutting around the top of the room. Our goal was to only need one coat, so we were trying to work quickly while still covering thoroughly and get as much done as possible before the baby woke up. The timing couldn't have been better, Truett took a 2 hour nap and I had finished and already put away my roller, and Chris was rolling the very last spot on his wall when we heard the first peep from the monitor! Now we just have to hang the border and pictures tomorrow and we might get his room finished before he turns 6 months old. . .

Lately I have felt like my life has been consumed with nursing related issues, so here is a little of what has been going on in my life and in my head in the last couple of weeks. We started giving Truett rice cereal when we were at my parents (he was about 5 months old) and in all the stuff I was reading about food allergies it kept saying to watch for congestion as a sign of a food allergy, my first thought was "how would we know if he is reacting to food since he is so congested all the time" followed shortly by the thought "wait a minute, why is he so congested all the time?" Now, Truett has been congested for a while (enough that people are constantly commenting on it) but I was just blaming it on day care germs. When I really stopped to think about it though, I realized that he has been chronically congested for a solid 2, maybe 3 months. He isn't sick at all, just a constant rattle or wheeze in his chest. I hadn't really noticed it much, and when I did notice it I just reminded myself that we have been in for a couple of well visits and the doctor hadn't seemed concerned about it, but I really started to realize that his congestion probably isn't normal. Anyway, to make a long story short (too late!), I started doing some research on my own and talking to the lactation consultant at my doctor and the nurse at his pediatrician and ultimately decided to go on an elimination diet, I basically cut all the common allergens out of my diet (plus anything that Chris has reactions to). The idea is to see if his congestion clears up and then slowly add things back in one at a time to see if it comes back with any particular food. I had already eliminated dairy from my diet since I am pretty sure he has a dairy allergy, and the fact that he might have a dairy allergy means it is more likely that he might have another food allergy.

In all of this, I keep reminding myself to keep a level head and that allergies are pretty rare, and even if he has a food allergy he will most likely outgrow it. Plus he is obviously thriving, so I don't have to worry about that! I am just really hoping that the results of this elimination diet are conclusive and we feel like we get a good "yes, he has allergies" or "no, he doesn't have food allergies." Believe me, I will have a bunch of questions for his 6 month appointment!!

It is a little high maintenance to think about everything I put in my mouth, and I certainly miss bread (wheat is out for now!), but really this diet is healthy if a little limited. I mean, anything that has me snacking on salads and sweet potatoes instead of chocolate can't be bad for me! I have had to cut out all processed foods, another healthy step. My guess is that if he has another allergy besides dairy it will be soy since I increased my soy intake when I cut out dairy and I think that might be when his congestion started.

In the middle of all this, Truett got a cold!!! So now I am just sticking to the diet and waiting out his cold so we can tell if his "regular" congestion is better. I felt like his breathing was better right before he got the cold so I am cautiously optimistic. Monday was 2 weeks for me on the diet, and tomorrow will be two weeks for him (I had to send milk with him to school for the first couple of days that I pumped before I started the diet), so hopefully he will get over his cold soon and we can get some answers! We stopped rice cereal while we are figuring all this out, but we might start cereal again soon, and then maybe some other low allergen foods like sweet potatoes, or millet, or squash.

The other major nursing concern was that right after I started the diet my supply dropped suddenly, and I got to the point one night where I did not have enough milk to send with him the next day, even though I had pumped two extra times that day. I didn't know what to do, I have a bunch of frozen milk but with being on the diet I didn't know whether to send milk containing a possible allergen and set us back on figuring out about all of that, or get a hypoallergenic formula. We decided to get the formula, since I was planning to use formula to thin his food anyway, so we will use it one way or the other, but I got really sad and was worried that this was the beginning of the end for nursing. I had been wondering if I would get to a point where I decided that the hassle of pumping was not worth the health benefits and enjoyment we both get from nursing, and this "scare" showed me that I am not emotionally ready to be done with nursing. I ended up being able to pump enough the next morning to send to school and we haven't used the formula yet, and after drinking tons of water, fenugreek tea, and nursing as much as I can get him to nurse, my supply is almost back to normal. Besides all of those things, I am also trying to remind myself that God is in control, not me, and that he will take care of me and my baby and that I should give thanks every day for nursing going well that day. (I would like to put in a little disclaimer here, I do not think formula is a bad choice, lots of things can make it the right choice, I think think you have to make the decision that is the best one for your family at the time. For us right now, that is still nursing but we might move to formula at some point if nursing is no longer working for our family before his 1st birthday).

I also keep trying to remind myself that these nursing issues that seem so huge right now, will probably seem like distant memories this time next year.

I know I have written a long, long post and my 2 readers have probably already quit by this point, but here is one (sorta) funny story: We have communion every Sunday at our church, and we walk up front where we tear off a piece of bread from a loaf and dip it into either the grape juice or wine. Anyway, I went through the whole process this past Sunday, and I was back in my seat in the act of raising the piece of bread to my mouth when it hit me that I can't eat bread right now! So then I was faced with the dilemma of what to do with the communion bread, I mean, can you throw away communion bread?!?! I ended up slipping it to Chris and asking him to eat it, but that seemed weird too. I am not sure what else I could have done though.

We spent the week of Memorial Day in Illinois with my family, and it was sooooooo nice to have a week off work, a week of being a full time mom, a week with my family, and even a little time for just Chris and me. We did lots of fun things, we took a day trip to Chicago, we took the whole family golfing (including my grandma and Truett), we finally found a Wii for sale (those things are scarce!) and got the whole family to have a wii bowling tournament (including my grandma, but excluding T). We also got to spend a couple of nights with Dave and Philana on the way home. Despite my fears, T did AWESOME on the trip up and the trip down. On the way up we left after work Friday and stopped in Nashville for the night at a dog friendly hotel, did I mention that we had both dogs with us and that we drove my FIT?, and finished the drive on Saturday. Boy was that hotel nasty! It was a Comfort Inn, so I thought it would be okay, but it was the kind of place where I kept my shoes on the whole time and tracked black stuff onto the bathroom floor from the carpet.

As awesome as the trip was though, after almost a full week back at home I still don't feel like we have totally recovered. There is still a suitcase waiting to be unpacked (it is full of all the projects I brought with me, foolishly thinking I would have time to work on them) and we still have laundry to do from our vacation. Truett is down to wearing the Christmas bibs, always a sign that we are behind on laundry! Traveling with a baby is certainly different than traveling with just the 2 of us, but it was a fun trip and definately worth it.

I still have flickr pictures to upload from the trip, I am slowly working through them.

I am so thankful to be a mom, and I am having fun on my first mother's day with a baby on the outside! I was only a few weeks pregnant last mother's day and had no idea what it would be like.
We had fun at Brian's graduation yesterday, and there are new pictures on flickr. We ended the day with a picnic by a lake, chilly but fun. This a big step in Brian's life and I am really proud of him. His girlfriend is graduation today with her master's in speach pathology, so congrats to Allison too!

There is definitely a learning curve to buying clothes for kids! Today Truett is wearing a pair of pants that I bought on sale at Old Navy when he was only a few weeks old and I was so young and inexperienced (unlike my current self with 4 ˝ months experience-I am such an old hand at this mothering thing now!). The pants are super cute and are big enough that they will probably fit him for at least another hour or two (he grows out of clothes quickly!), but they have a zip fly with a button at the top and no snaps to undo the legs for diaper changes! What was I thinking?!?! It is okay to have no snaps on the legs if you have an elastic waist to make it easy to get clothes on and off, but the combination of a real fly and no snaps is really inconvenient for a 4 month old. I am sure the day care ladies are complaining to each other with each diaper change today.

Also, we had a couple outfits when he was smaller that buttoned up the back, another no no for baby clothes! Also, if your baby has a big head like ours does (99% in head circumference), shirts with a round neck should also be avoided. They either need to unbutton, fasten in the front or have laped shoulders like a onesie.

And at the end of the day, he prefers wearing no clothes. He gets so excited and grins like crazy whenever we take his clothes off. Crazy baby!

On a side note, one plus size of having him in day care is that I go days (sometimes a whole week) without changing a poopy diaper. He tends to have only one a day, sometime in the middle of the day (that might be more info than you were interested in hearing!), and twice this week has had a huge blow out at day care involving a change in clothing. I am pretty sure he gets his clothes changed more than any other baby in his room.
I feel like every month I find myself saying "I can't believe he is already ____ months old!" I feel like we just came home from the hospital yesterday, and yet I have trouble remembering what life was like before he was here and it feels like he was always a part of our family.

His newest trick is that in the last couple of days he has started lifting his upper body and leaning forward to pick up toys that are in his lap. Until now, he would play with a toy if we handed it to him, but as soon as he dropped it he would forget about it. His hand eye coordination is getting better every day and he is way more purposeful about reaching for things and grabbing them. I can tell I am going to have to stop wearing dangly earrings soon!

In the past couple of weeks he has gotten way more vocal, you can really tell when he is excited about something (like eating!) and when he is not happy about his current situation!

He already is showing definite preferences, he has favorite toys and favorite activities. So far his personality is laid back but definite in what he wants (does that sound like anyone else we know?), and it will be interesting to see if it continues to develop along those lines.

We had his 4 month check up today, we are trying a new drs office, I was not happy with the pediatricians at Kaiser. He weighed in at 18 lbs, 11 oz and was 27 inches long! I have trouble carrying him in his car seat now, and I usually just get him out and carry him by himself.

He hasn't rolled over again since the first time he did it a few weeks ago, but I think he could if he wanted to. When we play with him on the floor he rolls onto his side all the time, but just hasn’t made the effort to keep going. With help in the balancing department he will stand for several minutes, bearing his own weight. He can’t sit up yet on his own, but if you balance him he will stay propped up for a few seconds before toppling over. He is also noticing other babies more and more and smiling at the other babies at day care.

So far I am still nursing, but it has been a rougher road than I anticipated (Going back to work has been really hard in lots of ways). I am so thankful that nursing itself has gone so smoothly, it makes all the pumping worth it. He loves, loves, loves eating, and that really helps me feel motivated to keep at it.

This has been the best 4 months of my life, I can't imagine not having Truett in our lives!

Truett had his two month appointment this past Monday, and he did not react well to the immunizations. I know there are a lot of strong opinions out there regarding vaccines, and I have some of my own. I think that growing up with a grandfather who was a paraplegic as a result of a childhood case of polio gave me some 1st hand evidence about why vaccinations are so important (although at one point as a kid I somehow had the idea that asparagus gave you polio-this was before I had a better grasp of how germs and diseases work :)). It was so hard to see him so miserable though, and screaming at the shots was just the beginning. He ran a fever of over 100 for at least 24 hours, and was so pathetic the whole time. He only wanted to be held constantly while he slept and ate. His little whimpers while he was sleeping made me want to whimper myself, and he spent the whole night sleeping on my chest. I am going to try to move his 4 month appointment to a Friday now that we know how he is likely to react to more vaccines. He is in the 97% for height and weight, tipping the scale at 14 lb 15 oz and measuring 25 inches. He is in the 99% for head circumference, which cracked me up, and also explained why none of the newborn hats ever really fit!

For the last couple of weeks or so (not counting Monday night!) he has been sleeping for at least 6 hours at a stretch at night and sometimes as long as 8 hours. I am soooooooo thankful that he is such a good sleeper, especially since I am going back to work in just over a week. I am not taking any credit for his sleeping habits, just feeling very blessed. Tonight is the first night we are trying to put him down in his crib by himself in his own room. Up until now, he has been sleeping his Amby Baby bed and I LOVE it, but we will have to change to the crib in the next couple of months and I would rather do it now while I can still take naps during the day, just in case we have some rough nights.

In other baby news (I will have other things to talk about someday-right now my life is pretty much focused on him) I have had to give up dairy because it was giving him gas. We were at that point that we were giving him milacon a few times a day, and gas was waking him up at night so when a friend suggested I try avoiding dairy I decided it was worth a try and cut it out for several days. Then one day last week I had two pieces of pizza for lunch and I was up with him in the middle of the night because he had gas. That taught me my lesson! I am not 100% dairy free, I still have margarine on my toast (which has dairy in it) and I eat baked goods that contain dairy, but these things don't seem to bother him. We are now pretty much gas free, and an unexpected side benefit is that his umbilical hernia seems way flatter now that he isn't straining all the time.

I had all kinds of projects I thought I might work on while I was on maternity leave, I mean I knew taking care of the baby would take up most of my time, but surely there would be plenty left over for fun projects, right? Well, of course any experienced mom knows that I haven't done half the things I wanted to do, but I don't mind at all. I have done quite a bit of reading and worked on a few small projects, sewing burp cloths, etc. I also made some earrings and a necklace for my mom for her birthday (I was about a month late with the gift, but better late than never!) These were fun to make, I used some Tiger Eye beads that came from my grandpa's stock, he was a jeweler, and even though my skills are still pretty basic I was pretty happy with how they turned out. It was fun making the packaging too. I used some paper that I bought for Truett's as-yet-unstarted scrapbook.

My big, exciting news for this morning is that Truett slept for 8 hours last night!!! He fussed once and I had to resettle him, but other than that he slept from about 8:30 last night to about 4:30 this morning. Whoo Hoo! What a way to celebrate his 2 month birthday. It was also nice to get the extra sleep since I have a cold and feel like crap. It also totally makes up for the 3 very interrupted nights we had this week while we were at my grandma's house.

Today is going to be the first time to use cloth diapers. I know with our life style right now that we will not be able to use cloth diapers full time, but my thinking is that whenever we use one we are saving money, keeping one more disposable out of the landfill and down the road will hopefully have an easier time potty training (because the cloth diapers are way more uncomfortable for the baby when they are wet). I didn't want to attempt cloth diapers when he was brand new because I wasn't sure how it would go and whether or not it would be overwhelming to have the extra loads of laundry, plus we got so many newborn sized diapers as gifts that we weren't going to need to buy diapers anyway. Actually, we haven't had to buy a single diaper yet-thanks to so many of our friends and family that gave us diapers as gifts. And since I used gift money to buy all the diapers and the covers-we haven't spent any of our own money on cloth diapers either. If anyone out there has tips for washing/using cloth diapers, etc. I would appreciate it. I have 2 of these pants (I am using cloth diapers inside instead of the disposable inserts this site sells) and 2 of these pants. I know I will probably end up needing more than 4 pairs of pants, but I wanted to try a couple first and see what I liked about the different styles.

Our baby is one month old today! I am so thankful for this time I have at home with him, getting to know him and seeing daily the changes in him as he grows and develops. It is so hard not to see each week that passes as one less week of my maternity leave. As I see what Chris misses by just being with Truett on the nights and weekends, I know that I am going to be missing as much when I go back to work. I realize that the life of a stay at home mom is far from easy, and I know that if I was staying home that there would be things I would miss about working, but at this point I am starting to realize how hard it is going to be to leave Truett every day. I am trying to treasure this time I have though, instead of wasting it by worrying about when it will be over.

I didn't intend for this to be a pity part entry, I wanted to document some of what he is doing at one month old-for my self and for any friends and family that might be interested. I have heard so many people tell me how quickly you forget these things so I want to try to record some of it. It is crazy how much difference a month makes . I am demand feeding, and while we are certainly not on any kind of schedule yet, I can see his sleeping and eating falling into more regular cycles. He generally goes 3-4 hours between feedings at night and usually sleeps pretty well between feedings (I think we ended up with a pretty easy baby!). During the day he takes 2 or 3 long naps usually, but his eating is really unpredictable during the day. He sometimes will eat 3 times an hour apart and sometimes go much longer. I am pretty sure he is getting enough food though- we weighed him this past weekend and he was 11 pounds! Today I noticed that he is getting elbow dimples, and rolls in this thighs and wrists. He likes his car seat as long at it is moving, either in the car or in a grocery cart, etc. and he seems to like being carried in a sling as well. We have seen smiles for a couple of weeks now, but they are still pretty rare. Truett has really strong neck muscles, he can hold his head away from your shoulder for several seconds when you hold him, and can pick up his head and turn it over to lay facing the other way when he is on his tummy. Today I laid him down on a play gym on the floor and the next time I looked at him he had rolled all the way onto his side. I know it was just a fluke, that he was writhing around and somehow got enough momentum to roll part way over, but I was surprised that he was strong enough for that! He hates pooping and gets really mad about it, he grunts and cries the whole time he is trying to poop. He also is pretty sensitive about being in a dirty diaper, he gets very fussy until you change him. He is generally pretty content though, and when he is fussy and crying it is usually because something is wrong. It is only in the last couple of days that he has had any tears when he cries, up until now his crying has been totally dry eyed. We have given him bottles of milk a couple of times, he seems to switch between nursing and drinking from a bottle just find-which will make the transition easier when I go back to work. I don't enjoy pumping, but it isn't as bad as I thought it might be. His hair is wavy and is usually pretty crazy looking, sticking up on the top and growing into a mullet on the back. I still think he favors Chris, but after looking at his baby pictures this past weekend to compare, I can see more of me and my family in there-at least in his hair line and mouth and maybe his build (although it is kind of early to tell what his build is going to be).

We took him to North Carolina this past weekend so that his grandparents could get see him and also so that he could meet his great grandma Muriel and his Uncle Nathan. He traveled really well, sleeping most of the drive and didn't seem to notice he was in a different place. This trip means that he has now been in 3 states (Georgia, of course, South Carolina and North Carolina). The Goseys spent the weekend "fighting" over him and arguing about who got to hold him next and who would get to change his clothes, or his diaper or give him a bath. It was a good weekend, and we ate lots of yummy food.

Today is my first solo day with the baby, Chris was home the first two weeks and my mom was here all last week. I am a little nervous, both about taking care of the baby all by myself and about spending all this time basically on my own. I haven't always done well with lots of alone time, but I am sure that taking care of the baby will help with that. Plus I can always make plans with a friend or something and I have a couple of new books on CD to listen to to keep me company. So far the morning has gone really well, I fed Truett twice, gave him a bath (not in the original plan for the morning!), put him down for a nap (he has been sleeping for an hour now), took my shower and ate breakfast-all before 10! I have a lot to get done today though, so I hope the rest of the day goes as smoothly.

I can't believe Truett is 3 weeks old now! It seems like it hasn't been that long and it seems like it has been way longer all at the same time. I think we have been very blessed with a content baby so far. He has his fussy moments but we haven't had to walk the floor with him at night or anything. He is sleeping really well at night for a newborn, 3 or 4 hours at a stretch sometimes. We had a several fussy nights that I was blaming on something I ate (I was trying to figure out if it was tomatoes, beans or onions) but we figured out that he just needed to be burped way more during the day-more on that later. Nursing is going really well too, we are still learning and figuring it out, but he is a really good eater and the whole process has been a lot easier than I was expecting. Every day I feel like I notice something new, he is focusing on objects more, his movements are becoming less jerky and I am pretty sure we have seen a few real smiles in the last couple of days. It is amazing how he is already his own little person with his own personality.

Did anyone else have this glowworm toy as a kid? I had one just like this green one and when we had Truett wrapped up in his blanket the other day it struck me that he looked a lot like my old glowworm. We are enjoying him so much, and enjoying our time at home with him. Yesterday we gave him a sponge bath (which he hated), and as I was putting a diaper on him afterwards he immediately pooped before I could even get the tabs undone to fasten the diaper on him. I started laughing and Chris came in the room to see what was going on and give me a hand. We got diaper number 2 on him, and got this one fastened before he pooped again. Figuring that he must be done by now, we put on diaper number 3, which he promptly dirtied. Laughing really hard by now, we decided to leave on the 3rd diaper for a while to see if he was really done. I sat down to feed him and realized that there was somehow poop on the outside of this diaper and one his outfit. On my way back to his room for the 4th diaper in 5 minutes I realized that he also pooped on the changing pad cover, the towel we used after his bath and the seat of his little tub! I had no idea he had it in him! We had an awesome first week with him. He
had a check up on Wednesday and got a clean bill of health. However, right after telling me how healthy our child was, the nurse practitioner said that since he was down to 8 lbs 3 oz that we would need to start supplementing with formula. Keep in mind that it had not even been 3 full days since he was born and my milk still wasn't in. I was very frustrated that she was just using an arbitrary standard, and not looking at our perfectly healthy and hydrated child. After telling us all this, she sent in a lactation consultant to talk to us and the lactation consultant was awesome! She totally affirmed everything we were doing and said to keep it up and also said that she was not concerned about the weight loss and that we should do what we feel comfortable with but she said she wouldn't supplement yet. They wanted us to come back in for a weight check on Friday and by the time we had that appointment, my milk was in and Truett was back up to 8 lbs 10 oz. The nurse we saw on Friday told us to "keep doing what you are doing!" which is funny, because what we did was ignore what they told us to do the last time we were in there. It just seemed like a huge overreaction, but I am sure that they have liability issues to consider. He is a champion eater, and I am sure he will be back up to his birth weight (or past it) by the time we go back in for his 2 week check up. The past two days I keep thinking about how I was in the hospital this time a week ago, and trying to remember where we were in the process at that time. The whole story is below for anyone interested:

On Friday, 12/28, I went in for my check up. Chris came with me to this appointment, which turned out to be a really good thing. We started talking to the midwife about my due date. Originally, based on a very early ultrasound, they set my due date at Dec 16, but at later ultrasound around 10 weeks the technician told us that he was measuring a week behind and that my real due date was Dec 23. However, apparently the radiologist felt like my due date was still the 16th when he or she reviewed the pictures later but the 23rd is what ended up on my chart. Anyway, after reviewing all this with one of the doctors at the practice, the midwife said she was pretty sure I was 41 weeks and 5 days NOT 40 weeks and 5 days like we thought. That meant that Monday would put me two weeks overdue, and the midwife did not feel like this was safe. I was kind of surprised at how concerned she was, she immediately hooked me up to a fetal monitor to check his heart rate and also did an ultrasound to check for fluid levels. Both those test results looked good, but she strongly recommended that we not wait until Monday and said that she wanted to induce me the next day (12/29). We have had a great experience with all the midwives at this practice, and they are all very non-interventionist, so we decided to trust her concerns and go with the induction.

We stopped at Chick-fil-a for some food on our way to the hospital since I knew they wouldn't want me to eat once I checked in. Hunger was one of my biggest complaints during the early stages. I started the Pitocin at 3 pm on Saturday and had contractions all day. They were harder than the Braxton Hicks contractions I had been having, but they weren't super intense. Chris and I spent the day hanging out in the hospital room, reading, listening to music and watching TV. (On a slightly cheesy note-we watched most of Shrek, which was also the movie we saw on our first real date (ok, that was really cheesy)). At 1:30 am the midwife decided that my body and I needed a break from the Pitocin and she turned it off to let me try to get some sleep. I was a little frustrated that we weren't making any progress and I wanted to keep going, but she was encouraging and told me that sometimes a little rest after a day of Pitocin would be enough to let me relax and get things moving along. We sort of dozed (as much as you can when you are in an uncomfortable bed with things strapped to you taking your blood pressure every 15 minutes and the alarm on the fetal monitor going off every time the baby changed positions and it couldn't sense the heartbeat as strongly). We started the day with the Pitocin at 2 ml and ended at 14 ml. The next morning we started it again at 6 am, starting at 2 ml. Immediately the contractions were harder than anything I had felt the previous day and I thought that was a great sign. In the meantime there was a shift change and we had a different midwife, both of the two midwives we had were my two favorite at the practice, so I was fortunate in that. However at 9:45 the 2nd midwife checked me and I was only at 1 cm, which was actually less than the midwife the day before had told me in the afternoon. I don't know if you can go backwards, or if it is just such a subjective measurement that you can't have any consistency, but the news that we had made no progress at all in the past 18 hours was so discouraging and I broke down at this point. I was so tired and so hungry and thought that a C-section was inevitable and felt like my body was broken in some way since it wasn't going into labor. The midwife brought in one of the doctors from the practice and he decided that breaking my water might move things along, something I had wanted to avoid since the baby is more protected from germs before the water breaks, but at this point I felt like we we should try whatever might work. He broke my water at 10:30am and right away the contractions got pretty intense. At 1 pm the midwife checked me again and said I was at 3 cm and definitely in active labor, all of which was good news. I was still just trying to relax through the contractions and trying to move around and change positions as much as possible while hooked up to an IV, sitting on an exercise ball worked for awhile but eventually I was just too tired. By 2 pm I was falling asleep between contractions, which meant that I would wake up after they had already started and I couldn't stay on top of the pain. They were also getting more and more intense. When the midwife checked again and I was only at 2.5 cm and realized I had only moved along .5 cm in an hour, I asked for an epidural. The time between deciding I wanted the epidural and actually getting it was pretty hard, but the anesthesiologist came and it was not bad at all. Going into this process I think I was more scared of the epidural than the labor-the idea of a huge needle in my spine freaked me out. I got the epidural at 3, and was able to doze off for a while. I never completely lost sensation, I could still feel pressure on the hardest contractions and was able to wiggle my feet and toes. By shortly after 6 pm I was at 10 cm. I think that the epidural is what made the difference, and helped everything move along much faster. I started pushing at 7pm and he was born right at 8pm on Dec. 30th. We were laughing afterwards because we went against pretty much everything on our birth plan, but I knew as soon as we agreed to the induction that we were headed down a different path than we originally planned, and I am totally fine with that. Going into it, we both felt that the pros of going drug free outweighed the cons as long as the baby was fine and I could deal with the pain, but we also agreed that we would be fine with pain medicine if I felt like I needed it. I will probably try to go drug free with the next one, I still feel like the pros outweigh the cons, and maybe next time I will actually be able to go into labor on my own!
